Abstract

This research was conducted to study the application of a musical instrument known as Cajon by using recycled plastics which is known as the High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). HDPE was chosen because of its naturally light weight, can be easily shaped, resistant to harsh environment, low cost and can be easily obtained too. This method can encourage people to use recycled materials to make musical instrument because recycled materials share equivalent properties with other materials such as wood and this can solve the problem of solid waste disposal. This research was conducted to analyze the sound quality, flexibility, durability and the material compatibility to make a musical instrument. This allows material exploration while creating a new phenomenon in manufacturing musical instruments industry by using a new material which was recycled from Group II of plastic which is the High Density Polyethylene (HDPE).
