Abstract
The Rainforest Fringe Festival (RFF), Sarawak’s vibrant prelude to the Rainforest World Music Festival, re-emerged in Kuching—now in its third incarnation—to celebrate the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Sarawak. Hosted city-wide from July 5–12, the ten-day event showcased music, visual art, crafts, film, photography, fashion, food, and performances that blended traditional and contemporary expression Under the patronage of Sarawak’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth & Sports, RFF provides immersive, multidisciplinary programming. Highlights included opening weekend tributes to indigenous culture through dance (notably "Primates"), fashion showcases featuring songket and keringkam, international indigenous film screenings, live tattoo art, Kayan oral-performance collaborations, "Plating the Wild" eco-gastronomy, and exhibitions like “Rainforests of the World” by Ch’ien Lee First launched in 2017 by Joe Sidek, then artistic director of the George Town Festival, RFF has quickly grown in scale and ambition. Set against historic venues such as the Old Courthouse and Waterfront Hotel, the festival emphasizes community engagement and cross-cultural dialogue. It aligns with Sarawak’s wider festival month in July, complementing the Rainforest World Music Festival and Borneo Jazz Festival RFF stands out as a curated, dynamic platform celebrating Sarawak’s diversity. It engages local and international artists, promotes indigenous narratives, fosters creative collaborations, and reaffirms the state’s commitment to cultural vitality and sustainable tourism.
