Abstract

This study was conducted to identify the levels of emotional self-disclosure among clients who had attended counseling sessions conducted by Third Year Counseling students in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). Besides, the researcher also aimed to investigate whether client's demographic factors, age, gender and race, and practicing counselor's demographic factors, age, gender and race affects the levels of client's emotional self-disclosure. This study is a quantitative study and a questionnaire was modified from the Emotional Self-Disclosure Scale (ESDS) by Snell (1990) was used . The questionnaire forms were then distributed to the respondents through their practicing counselors as the researcher cannot have direct contact with the respondents due to confidentiality in counseling. Of all the 39 distributed questionnaires, researcher managed to collect 30. Then, the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics methods to calculate the frequencies and percentages of client's and counselor's demographic factors. The levels of client's emotional self-disclosure in the session is also identified through the descriptive statistics method. Next, the hypotheses were tested using One-Way ANOYA and ttest to identify the differences between independent variables in affecting the client's levels of emotional self-disclosure in the session. Results from this study indicated that no high level of client's emotional self-disclosure exist. Results also showed the demographic factors of client and counselor has no significant effect on client's levels of emotional self-disclosure. Researcher concluded that a high level of client's self disclosure is not necessary in order for the session to be successful.
