Abstract

Artists’ Statement Artists : Dr Thia Sock Siang, Ng Sie Ai, Dr Elena Gregoria Chai Chin Fern Title : Living Treasure Medium : Photography Size : 12” x 15” (4 units) The series, Living Treasure, portrays both the tangible and the intangible cultural properties of Chinese opera. Chinese opera is an art that contains rich forms of expression. Its performance combines action, music and singing. While these are the main expressive components of the opera, other elements such as the costumes, masks, dance, martial arts, acrobatics and local traditions also contribute to the overall expressiveness of the performance. Chinese opera is often staged in a complex language of symbols rather than the more common drama that utilizes realistic actions and events. The symbols are very prominent in most aspects of Chinese opera. Masks, costumes and painting on the faces disclose the natures of the character. The character’s gestures, facial expressions and movements reveal their behavior as well as their relationships with others. Symbolism is also visible on the stage through the design and arrangements of props. Over the past few decades, Chinese opera in Kuching city has flourished and brought fond memories. However, this culture is slowly diminishing. We created this artwork out of a desire to present Chinese opera as a living treasure that prevails to this day and to cultivate an awareness and appreciation for this precious art form.
