Abstract
"" The effect of ionosphere on the mobile satellite (MS) L-band signal propagating from the transmitting satellite to the receiver over the equatorial region has attracted much interest. Many studies have been carried out for the MS signal performance especially in countries located in the mid-latitude region. However, there is no study done in Sarawak which is located at the equatorial region. Very little is known about the ability to model the MS signal over the Sarawak region and many MS systems models have always been insufficient for the Sarawak region due to different latitude regi09 The objectives of this research are to perform analysis on the received satellite signa'l, develop an empirical model for open space received satellite signal in Sarawak and characterize the open space L-band MS signal propagation in Sarawak. By means of data acquisition system using the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, MS signal propagation data which has been recorded under the open space environment at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak was analyzed and used to imitate the actual MS signal performance. The GPS raw data which has been recorded in Fukuoka is used as reference. The analysis results are presented in the forms of received signal performance, fade analysis, Complementary Cumulative Distribution Function (CCDF) of certain GPS satellites and Total Electron Content (TEC). MS propagation characteristics in Sarawak show consistent result as compared to that in Fukuoka. Although there is similarity in terms of the received SNR pattern, the fluctuations experienced by different satellite signals vary. Open space fluctuations are experienced by received satellite signal in Sarawak due to multi path effect and system noise which give 5 dBHz of attenuation effect from peak to peak. In addition, ionospheric effect has also contributed to the signal degradation. Empirical model of received satellite signal in open space MS environment In Sarawak with respect to the elevation angle has shown a similarity of 96.77% as compared to that empirical model developed in Fukuoka. From the analysis, it was observed that the received satellite signal will experience certain degree of degradation due to ionospheric effect. An empirical model as a function of elevation angle and TEC has also been developed for the received signal performance in Sarawak region for the line of sight environment based on data collected from the GPS Ionospheric Scintillation and TEC Monitor (GISTM). For future work, the availability of more satellite propagation data will enhance the understanding of satellite propagation and therefore improve the mathematica1 model.
