Abstract
The rapid growth of urban areas has cause the increase of land use changes which modify most natural enviroment to built enviroment. during this modification process, many urban trees were felled to give way to urban development which uses materials that effectively retain heat which corresponds to the increase in average temperature of the urban areas resulting in urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon. Mitigation of the UHI effect can be accomplished by having more trees which provides natural shade, the ability to sequest carbon, also reducing ambient temperature through evapotranspiration process. Most people do not realize that these green assets are crucial to the urban enviroment in consideration of their enviromental services, social benefits, and also economic benefits. Therefore, the needs to intensify conservation, funding and community support from urban greening calls for a proper valuation on potential urban heritage trees together with a proper formation of a legal policy on protecting and conserving the trees in order to achieve sustainable development.
