Abstract

Etlingera spp. is one of the largest genus in ginger family Zingiberaceae that commonly used by local communities for medicinal purposes, culinary and insect repellent. There are many traditional uses and medicinal claims of Etlingera spp. by different communities in Borneo. However, there are still lack of scientific studies to support the traditional applications of this plant as potential source of antioxidants and an alternative to synthetic pesticides. This study covers extraction, isolation and characterization of bioactive compounds from Etlingera spp. as well as evaluating their potential for antioxidant and bio-repellent against free radicals and stored product pest, respectively.
