Abstract

This study attempts to find out the teachers' perceptions towards the usage of English in teaching Science in Sibu. The samples used in this study were 76 teachers teaching Science in English from fourteen primary schools in Sibu. This study focused on three aspects. The first aspect was teachers' perception towards teaching Science in English. The second aspect was the difference perceptions of teachers regarding different demographic characteristics in terms of gender and teaching experience in teaching Science in English. The third aspect was to find out the relationship between teachers' perceptions and the factors namely motivation, student ability and teaching method towards teaching Science in English. A three section questionnaire was administered to 76 teachers teaching Science in English for primary schools in Sibu. Based on the findings, it was revealed that the majority of teachers have positive perception towards teaching Science in English with 94.5% of them supporting the idea that teaching of Science in English is interesting. The findings also revealed that there was a positive correlation between teachers' perception and the three factors towards teaching Science in English. However, there were no significant differences on the gender and teaching experience to teachers' perception. In general, teachers in Sibu respond positively to the implementation of teaching Science in English.
