Abstract

This project was conducted to obtain the drying characteristics of pepper berries, design and also analyze the modeled solar dryer. After obtaining the drying characteristics, a solar dryer was designed and simulated using CFD. The solar chimney concept was used as the design basis for the solar dryer model. The drying characteristics that were obtained from the experiment carried out were used to determine the drying model and the diffusion coefficient for a drying air temperature of 55°C and at a velocity of 0.2 ms-1. The most suitable drying model was determined to be the logarithmic model and the diffusion coefficient was also found to be in the 10-11 value. Two dryer models with different dimensions but similar geometry were then simulated using STAR-CD to obtain its temperature and air velocity profile for each model. The air velocity profiles obtained revealed that a very low air velocity was achieved with a maximum value of 0.03 ms"" for Model 1 and 0.15 ms-' for Model 2 within the chimney of each respective model. The temperature profile also revealed that most of the heat was concentrated within the chimney of each model. The comparison between the two models revealed that model two was the better choice. The limitations of the CFD simulation in predicting the heat and mass transfer of the models were also discussed
