Abstract

This study aims to explore the experiences of the gay individuals in disclosing their homosexuality to their family members and friends. This research consists of four research questions which are the experiences of being gay, reasons of gay disclosure, consequences from the disclosure, and how the gay individuals cope with the consequences. This research is done by using qualitative method and the Narrative approach is used by the researcher to generate research questions and interpret the data obtained from the online interview. The research findings show that being gay is not an option for the research participants. They are who they are. They try very hard to survive in this homophobic country in which the citizens have strong cultural and religious beliefs. The research participants have gone through a hard time to be homosexuals and now they are open with their sexuality. There are some consequences they have to face, such as elimination from homophobic friends, denial from the parents, tense atmosphere after the disclosure in the family, and some of them even committing suicide because they thought that life had come to an end where nobody was there to support and accept them. This minority group of people actually do not mean to harm anyone around them but they just want to live their life with honesty and support from friends and family. They need to be heard, loved, and cared just like everyone else. With this research, the hope is, that the society will have an opportunity to understand how gay individuals live their life and hence decrease the homophobic level within Malaysia. The researcher has made some conclusions and suggestions to assist this group of people, as well as for other parties to understand more about homosexual individuals
