Abstract
As reading many past researches that related to western vegetarians, this work aimed to understand the Malaysian context especially at East Malaysia by investigating the transition and challenges occurred behind a distinct dietary practice, which is vegetarianism in the perspective of young women in Kuching, Sarawak. Four objectives had been set which aimed to justify the local vegetarian taxonomies, their reason to take vegetarian diet, challenges that they have faced and the possible changes in their social relation. Purposive sampling and snowball sampling were used to find 12 suitable respondents: young women who aged between 20 and 39 from 4 selected places. Observation, interview schedule and in-depth interview have been taken as the research instrument to collect data. Results are transcribed using thematic analysis approach as well as narrative analysis. Findings shown there are many overlapping taxonomies and motivations appears to a young woman vegetarian when they want to have their vegetarian diet. More than half of them (8 out of 12) approved that they have encountered challenges either in their own desire to meat, perception of other on them and place to serve this kind of food, but they think all of this are minor challenges and not the critical problem on their diet. Changes in social relation can be handled easily by ignoring and negotiation. Initially, this study aimed to adopt feminism to understand the phenomena but fail to do so as the challenges that they faced and their social relation were not restricted by their gender roles and their sex. Hence, this study will be discussed with cultural imposition on the struggles of women vegetarians in Kuching, Sarawak.
