Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the denotative and connotative meanings of jaku betandu within the context of the novel Kemayang Pengerindu. The objectives of this study are, first, to identify and categorize jaku betandu according to word classes, and second, to analyze the denotative and connotative meanings of jaku betandu in the text of Kemayang Pengerindu. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, with data obtained from the text contained in the novel Kemayang Pengerindu. The instrument used in this study is the text itself, which consists of 1,920 stanzas, each comprising 3 to 24 lines. The text is analyzed systematically to achieve the research objectives through a qualitative approach, focusing on the denotative and connotative meanings of jaku betandu in the novel. The research methodology applied is qualitative, which is employed to address each of the research objectives formulated in this study. Only 15 data samples are analyzed in this section. The original text in the Iban language is translated literally into Malay. However, the literal or denotative meaning in the context of these sentences does not convey the actual meaning intended in the narrative.
