Abstract

This study compares the quality of human and machine translation of the novel Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince using Eugene Nida’s dynamic equivalence theory. The objectives were to assess the cultural suitability of translations in Malay and to compare the quality of both translation types based on Nida’s principles. This qualitative study analyzed 20 selected paragraph from 30 chapters of the novel, involving the official human translation by Pelangi and the machine translation via Google Translate. Data were evaluated using six principles: accuracy of information, naturalness, closest natural equivalence, prioritization of meaning, cultural adaptation, and stylistic effectiveness. The findings revealed that human translation consistently performed better in conveying meaning, emotional tone, and cultural nuances naturally and accurately. In contrast, machine translation was often literal and lacked contextual sensitivity, resulting in a weaker impact on readers. This study offers significant implications for education, translation practice, and language technology development. It also suggests future research involving hybrid translation models and alternative translation theories. The results confirm the indispensable role of human translators in literary translation, particularly for texts requiring cultural sensitivity and stylistic depth.
