Abstract

This study examines the use of politeness strategies in the speech of DYMM Sultan Johor at the Johor State Legislative Assembly to ensure ef ective communication in an of icial setting. The study focuses on two main objectives: identifying the application of the maxims of wisdom and generosity based on Leech’s Politeness Theory (1983) and analyzing strategies for managing face-threatening acts (FTA) using Brown and Levinson’s framework (1987). This qualitative study employs discourse analysis on Sultan Johor’s speeches from 2019 to 2023. Data were obtained from of icial transcripts and digital sources, and video speeches were transcribed for systematic analysis. Findings reveal that the maxim of wisdom is more dominant than the maxim of generosity, while all five politeness strategies are used to manage FTA in the Sultan’s speech. The study contributes to political communication and linguistics by demonstrating how politeness in language strengthens leadership credibility and governance ef ectiveness. Future research should explore comparisons with speeches from other leaders, analyze public reception of leadership communication, and examine semantic and pragmatic aspects in of icial
