Abstract

This study aims to examine the process of glide spreading found in the Sadong Malay dialect, focusing on two objectives: identifying the types of glides in the Sadong Malay dialect and analyzing the process of glide spreading within the dialect. The methodology employed in this study is quantitative in nature. A total of eight informants participated, comprising four females and four males aged 50 and above, all of whom are proficient speakers of the Sadong Malay dialect. The data were subsequently analyzed using Autosegmental Phonology theory (Goldsmith, 1990). The findings revealed two types of glides in the Sadong Malay dialect, namely [w] and [y]. The glide [w] occurs after the vowels [u] and [o] when they precede other vowel sequences such as [ua], [ui], and [oa]. Meanwhile, the glide [y] arises when the vowel [i] precedes vowel sequences such as [iu] and [ia]. The process of glide spreading from high and mid-high vowels reflects a tendency for segments to dominate adjacent segments by spreading their features and forming a segment that shares similar characteristics and identity.
