Abstract

This research explores the application of connotative meaning in Shahnon Ahmad’s Debu Merah short story collection, using Leech’s (1974) theory as the analytical framework. A total of 100 data instances were found and grouped into three categories: positive, negative, and neutral connotations. The analysis shows that Shahnon Ahmad skillfully employs connotative elements, especially idioms, to express social commentary, internal character emotions, and implicit societal critiques. Phrases like “kepala batu” (stubborn) and “kera sumbang” (outcast) convey underlying meanings that align with character development and narrative context. The study illustrates that connotative expressions not only enrich literary style but also serve as powerful symbolic tools to communicate layered meanings to the reader. Theoretically, the findings contribute to the field of semantic literary analysis in Malay literature. Practically, the study provides valuable insight for students, educators, and creative writers into the effectiveness of figurative language. Future studies are encouraged to examine other works by Shahnon Ahmad or to conduct comparative research with different authors to further expand literary and semantic discourse in Malay texts.
