Abstract

This study aims to examine the degree of linguistic relationship between Bidayuh Bisitang, spoken in Kampung Menjau, and Bidayuh Biatah. While Bidayuh Biatah has been the subject of various studies, Bidayuh Bisitang remains under-researched. A qualitative approach and lexicostatistical method based on the 100-word Swadesh list were employed to calculate the percentage of cognate words between the two languages. In addition, 150 lexical items from three semantic domains (nouns, verbs, adjectives) were analysed phonetically to identify similarities and differences in phonemes. Data were collected through interviews with four native speakers of Bidayuh Bisitang and compared with data from Bidayuh Biatah. The findings show that the cognate percentage exceeds 80%, indicating a close linguistic relationship between the two languages. However, phonemic analysis revealed several significant phonological differences. The study concludes that although both languages share a common origin, Bidayuh Bisitang should be acknowledged as a distinct linguistic variety. This research contributes to the documentation and preservation efforts of underrepresented Bidayuh languages.
