Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of diphthongs and glides and to analyze the process of glide formation in the Kabong Malay subdialect (SDMKb) of Sarawak. A total of 500 vocabulary items, comprising 100 Swadesh list words and four lexical domains (verbs, adjectives, nouns and places)served as the main dataset. Four native SDMKb speakers were interviewed directly. Goldsmith’s (1976) autosegmental theory was applied to analyze glide phenomena while syllable structure theory by Clements (1985) was used for diphthong analysis. The findings reveal several diphthongs in SDMKb such as /ai/, /oi/, /au/ and /ei/ which differ from those in Standard Malay. Additionally, glides /y/ and /w/ were identified as the result of high vowel feature spreading from /i/ and /u/ in word structures. This study contributes to local linguistic documentation and offers a deeper phonological understanding of Malay dialectal variation in Sarawak, especially in distinguishing the unique phonetic behavior of SDMKb.
