Abstract
This study aims to describe verb affixation in the Vaie language. The objectives of the study are to categorize the types of verbs in Vaie, to identify the types of affixes that form derived verbs, and to explain the functions and meanings of these affixes. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected from five native speakers of the Vaie language in Kampung Jepak, Bintulu, and were analyzed based on structural linguistic theory. A total of 100 verbs were analyzed. Findings show that affixes in the Vaie language function as both inflection (indicating tense/aspect or active/passive voice) and derivation (changing word class or meaning). The verb affixes found in Vaie include the prefixes [me-], [men-], [mem-], [meng-], [di-], and [be-], as well as the suffixes [-an] and [- kan]. The prefix [meN-], in its various allomorphs, undergoes a homorganic assimilation process when combined with root words. The study also identifies categories of intransitive and transitive verbs (active and passive). Overall, the process of verb affixation in Vaie shows certain similarities with other related languages in the MalayAustronesian language family, particularly in terms of the use of prefixes such as [me-], [men-], [mem-], [meng-], [di-], and [be-], which are also found in Malay. However, there are also distinctive features that differentiate Vaie, such as its unique allomorph forms and morphophonemic processes. Therefore, this study not only highlights typological similarities in morphology among related languages but also emphasizes the unique linguistic identity of the Vaie language.
