Abstract
Acidic rainfall at tropical sites have been reported with increasing frequency and it is being recognized that acid rain is a global phenomenon which may affect compounds. This study was conducted to assess the chemical composition of rainwater at remote area, housing area and industrial area around Kuching in order to determine the extend and nature of environmental pollution and the rainwater quality among this three major sampling stations will over time be compared. Eight sampling stations were selected with three sampling stations from remote area. three sampling stations from housing area and two sampling stations from industrial area. A number of basic physical and chemical parameters were analysed. Conductivity and pH were measured using ClBA Corning; turbidity was measured uBing HORIBA Water Checker U-10; nitrate, ammonia, chloride, and sulfate were determined by Dr 1700 Colorimeter; heavy metals were determined by Perkin Elmer AAS 3110 and organic compounds was detected by using Gas Chromatographicl Mass Spectrometric. Rainwater quality of Kuching was considered as nonpolluted at all the sampling stations. However, there is slightly higher concentration of TSS, turbidity, pH, sulfate and nitrate values at industrial area. The concentration of heavy metals that detected at the rainwater of all the sampling stations are at the range or lower if compared with the concentrations of those parameters that detected at Brunei Darusallam. Through the ANOVA test at 95% confident level, there is not any significant difference of the physical and chemical contents of remote, housing and industrial area except for the concentration of nitrate and magnesium. So,the acid rain is not detected at Kuching.
