Abstract

This study aims to identify the phenomenon of lexical extinction between older and younger generations in the Kelantan Malay dialect, specifically the Malay accent in Kota Bharu. The objectives are to identify the distinct lexical items used by older and younger native speakers of the Kelantan Malay dialect, and to elaborate on the factors influencing these lexical changes. The study also examines the level of comprehension of selected lexical items in the Kelantan Malay dialect among the younger generation by applying the familiarity rating method. This research adopts a qualitative approach, conducting interviews with twelve village residents, comprising six older generation speakers and six younger generation speakers. Informants were selected based on the criteria of being native speakers of the Kelantan Malay dialect who grew up within the community and use this dialect as their primary language. A total of 100 words were compared between the older and younger generations. Additionally, a questionnaire was distributed to 20 respondents to determine the level of lexical comprehension among the younger generation (aged 7 to 24 years). The findings show that out of the 100 words compared, 84 words were not understood by the younger generation (aged 15 to late 40s). The results of the second study indicate that 18 words were unknown to the younger generation out of the 20 words asked in the questionnaire. In conclusion, the initial findings suggest that lexical extinction in Kelantan Malay is already occurring in the speech of the younger Malay generation in Kelantan. The lexical differences between the older and younger generations are driven by various factors, such as the formal education system, mass media, communication technology, and urbanization processes.
