Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of rhetorical techniques in news reports on the Palestinian issue published by two major Malaysian digital newspapers, Berita Harian and Berita Awani. According to Asmah (1988), as cited in Aisha (2023), rhetoric is defined as an expression delivered aesthetically to influence the thoughts of others and capable of generating a positive impact. The study adopts the modern rhetorical theory by Enos and Brown (1993) as its theoretical framework. A descriptive qualitative design was employed, involving the purposive selection and analysis of 50 digital news texts. The study identifies five main rhetorical techniques: exposition, explanation, persuasion, narration, and argumentation. Findings reveal that persuasion and narration are the most dominant techniques used in conveying messages related to the Palestinian issue. These results highlight the media’s role in fostering empathy and public understanding of humanitarian issues. The study contributes to the field of linguistics, particularly in language register and communication strategies, and supports the application of modern rhetorical theory in digital media writing. It also serves as a reference for language teaching and learning. Future research is recommended to explore a wider range of genres and communication mediums to deepen understanding of rhetorical techniques in social and humanitarian discourse.
