Abstract

Linguistic impoliteness refers to language use that contradicts norms of politeness and can undermine an individual's dignity (Culpeper, 1996). In communication, this phenomenon reflects the social and cultural dynamics of a society. This study examines positive and negative impoliteness strategies in dialogues from Sarawak Malay films and assesses their frequency in three TVS-produced films: Sikboh Halang Aku Lari, Sapa Ngekot Kita, and Kamboh Raya Telemusikal. Using Culpeper's (1996) Impoliteness Framework, the study identifies aspects of positive and negative impoliteness in speech and their usage frequency. Data was collected through dialogue transcription and analyzed descriptively. The findings indicate that negative impoliteness strategies are more dominant (51.3%) than positive impoliteness (48.7%), with elements of insult, ridicule, and intimidation appearing more frequently in dialogues. This study contributes to the fields of linguistics and pragmatics by exploring how impolite language reflects the social and cultural relationships of the Sarawak community in media. The findings may also serve as a reference for researchers and filmmakers in understanding the impact of impolite language on narrative and audience perception.
