Abstract

This study aims to analyze the attitude of Bajau Samah community towards the use of Bajau Samah language in their daily communication. This study focuses on two main objectives, namely identifying the language attitudes and motivations towards the use of Bajau Samah language among the Bajau community and identifying the motivations of Bajau Samah youth towards the use of their mother tongue, namely Bajau Samah language. This descriptive quantitative study utilized a probing instrument for data collection. The study data were analyzed according to the theoretical framework of Gardner's (1985) Socio educational Model of language acquisition. The results showed that attitudes towards the use of the Bajau Samah language among Bajau youth showed a positive attitude for aspects of use, speaker status, pride and culture. However, the aspects of integration and language also Bajau Samah belia have a neutral attitude. The results for the second objective also found that the level of motivation shown by Bajau Samah teenagers towards the use of their mother tongue is high for both aspects, namely aspects of integrative motivation and instrumental motivation. Overall, the results for language attitudes and motivation towards the use of the Bajau Samah language among Bajau teenagers in Berungis Village show positive and high results, although there are some results that show modest attitudes, namely the aspects of integration and language.
