Abstract

This study examines the local wisdom values embedded in Iban folktales, specifically through a textual analysis of Ensera Kumang Ari Gelong Batu Nakong by Jimmy Donald (2004). The primary objective of this research is to identify and elaborate on the local wisdom values found within the story, based on the value classification frameworks proposed by Rahmawati et al. (2023) and Lestari (2019). Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes the corpus data thematically. Values such as Politeness, Friendship, Hard Work, Responsibility, Cooperation, Harmony and Conflict Resolution, Curiosity, Honesty, Tolerance, Religiousness, and Compassion are identified as core elements in shaping the identity of the Iban community. The findings affirm that ensera, as a form of traditional narrative, functions not only as a source of entertainment but also as a medium for moral education and cultural transmission. The results indicate that Iban folktales hold significant potential for teaching noble values and preserving cultural heritage that is increasingly threatened by modernization and globalization. This study aims to contribute to the documentation of ethnic narratives and to pave the way for further research in the fields of oral literature and cultural anthropology in Malaysia.
