Abstract
This study aims to analyze the mythological elements of supernatural beings in the Lengilo’ ethnic folktales found in Ba’Kelalan, Lawas, Sarawak. These myths serve as vital components of the Lengilo’ community’s oral tradition, reflecting their belief systems and worldview concerning supernatural entities believed to exist within their universe. The main objectives of this study are to identify the mythological elements within these stories and to analyze their functions through theoretical approaches proposed by Long (1990) and Malinowski (1944). This research adopts a qualitative methodology, with data collected through semi-structured interviews conducted in Ba’Kelalan. The findings reveal that many mythical narratives remain undocumented, highlighting the need for systematic efforts to record and preserve the oral cultural heritage of the Lengilo’ people. Through an analysis of the functions of myths, the study shows that myths play a crucial role in shaping cultural identity, providing moral guidance, and offering explanations for natural and social phenomena within the Lengilo’ community. This research emphasizes the importance of documenting these myths to ensure that the cultural heritage of the Lengilo’ people can be passed down to future generations and not be sidelined by the forces of modernization.
