Abstract

This study aims to investigate the elements of linguistic impoliteness in the local animation series Ibantoon: Aki Selumbong, using the Linguistic Impoliteness Strategies proposed by Culpeper (1996). Employing a qualitative research design, content analysis was conducted on 39 episodes of the animation uploaded on the Ibantoon Animasi YouTube channel. Data were collected through observation and transcription of character dialogues. A total of 66 instances of impoliteness were identified and categorized into five main strategies: direct impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm, and withholding politeness. The findings reveal that direct impoliteness is the most dominant strategy, followed by negative impoliteness and sarcasm. This study demonstrates that the animation features various forms of impoliteness that have the potential to influence viewers’ perceptions and behaviors, particularly among children. The implications of the study highlight the importance of evaluating linguistic content in local media to ensure the preservation of cultural values and politeness norms within entertainment platforms.
