Abstract

This study aims to explore the leadership skills and academic performance, suggestions to balance in study and other activities, and the relationship between leadership skills and academic performance of student leaders in a public learning institution (Unimas). The subject of this study is the four selected student leaders in the Student Representative Council (MPP) Unimas year 2009. This study is based on mixed-methodology approach which involved questionnaire and semi-structured interview based on in-depth interpretations towards informants' feedback of the proposed questions. All the information from the interview sessions are analyzed based on content analysis method. From the findings, student leaders have different leadership skills and academic performance. The strongest leadership skills of student leaders are public speaking, understanding and role model; the weakest leadership skills are confrontation, ambition and versatility. Students are encouraged to prepare a time schedule and reduce their sleeping hours. This research creates a profile of the leadership skills that should possess by a , student leader such as diligence, persistence, understanding, confrontation, public speaking, problem solving, role model, disposition, flexibility, ambition, organization, punctually, loyalty, street smarts, versatility, managing, logical thinking, tolerate, participative and empathy. This research assists in increasing awareness of the management of higher education and students to develop and strengthen their leadership skills.
