Abstract

This study aimed to identify the frequency and percentage of PKPG ESL (3) students in UNIMAS who experienced anxiety in oral presentation in English in relation to their gender, educational background and number of years in teaching. It also attempted to investigate the factors that cause the anxiety and to find out the effects to the students' performance in oral presentation. It also aimed to reveal the strategies employed by these students to reduce or overcome their anxiety in oral presentation. The data was obtained through the PSA Self-assessment Test adapted from Jaffe (2004) and a semi structured interview. 37 respondents comprised of 22 female and 15 male participated in the PSA Self-assessment Test. 10 respondents with the highest scores in the test were randomly selected for the interview. The result of the test revealed that the gender, educational background and number of years in teaching do influence anxiety in oral presentation in English. Out of 37 students, 21 (56.7%) of female students seemed to be more anxious than the male. 21 out of 37 (56.7%) students from BM medium were more anxious than those from English and Chinese mediums when they had to present orally in English. Apart from that 8 out of 37 students who had the least number of years in teaching also showed that they were more (21.6%) anxious than their friends who had been teaching for quite some time. Result of the interview revealed that there were 5 sources of the students' anxiety. These sources were audience factors, shyness, lack of proficiency in English, lack of knowledge of the topic and lack of presentation skills. The students had various ways to deal with their anxiety like rehearsing before the actual presentation, getting fully prepared physically and mentally. Some of them had their friends to motivate them and some practised self-motivation. The other technique highlighted is deep breathing technique.
