Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the materials that parents provided for their children's English learning, parents' rational for providing materials for their children's English learning, factors that influence parents in providing materials for their children's English learning and parents involvement with their children in addition to the use of the English language materials provided by them. Interviews were carried out with forty parents from Kg. Sim- Sim in Sandakan, Sabah. The interview questions consisted of twenty-nine questions which were divided into two parts, Part A (demographics) and Part B (the objectives of the study). The result showed that there were nine types of English materials provided by the parents for their children in their English Language studying and learning. The main reason parents gave for providing materials was to get their children to like and enjoy English. The results also showed that majority of the parents were influenced by their awareness towards the importance of English Language in their children's lives and therefore they provided the materials. This study also identified seven types of activities done by the parents with their children in using the materials provided by them. Based on the findings, suggestions and recommendation for further studies were also discussed.
