Abstract
Land use transition in Sarawak is mainly caused by the land development projects under the State programme. In the mission to ‘develop’ rural communities, the state introduced various land development projects to ‘uplift’ the standards of living of the rural poor as well as to pull them into the mainstream of ‘modernisation’ (Cramb, 2007). However, this has taken a toll in the rural community’s livelihood. Not only does this affect their livelihood activity directly, all other livelihood aspects such as the access to resources and their traditional cultural practices are also affected. Despite all that, they manage to strive and sustain their livelihood. Using Sustainable Livelihood Framework as the guideline for this research, I am looking at the communities’ strategies in navigating their livelihood despite constant changes that took place. With that, my study focuses on diversification of livelihood strategies which include the diversification of access to capital assets. Access is the key factor that affects a household’s livelihood sustainability.
