Abstract
Peat is one the softest and most troublesome of the soft soils in engineering terms and is subjected to instability and massive primary and long-term consolidation settlements. Sarawak has approximately 1.6 million ha or 13% of the total land area (2.7million ha). Approximately 1.5 million ha or 89% of Sarawak's peat are more than 1. 5 m depth. Malaysia is moving towards a developed country status by 2020 and as the infrastructural developments proceed at a rapid pace, projects are increasingly needed to be locate on almost everywhere including construction over peaty soil. Hence, suitable geotechnical design parameters and construction techniques needed to be found for this type of ground condition. Laboratory assessment of the peat sample from Batu Kawa and Matang of Kuching, and Sessang in Sarikei Division were conducted in order to characterize the hydrologic and geotechnical properties of peat. In the field that was at Sessang, peats were collected from 5 different types of land clearing methods. In the laboratory, samples of each peat were analyzed for moisture content, pH value, particle size distribution by sieve analysis and hydrometer analysis, bulk density and organic content. Results obtained from this study showed that the permeability of peat is generally low (1.9818 x 10° cm/day and 2.1359 x 10° cm/day) due to high organic content (96%- 97%). The chemical analysis on peat showed that peat is very acidic ranges in pH between 3.00-4.5. The bulk density of peat is also low due to very high moisture content.
