Abstract

Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is a second generation international mobile communication system used all over the world. In Malaysia, GSM covers the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz band. GSM 1800 is based on the GSM 900 technology but with higher cell capacity. This project describes the modification of Hata Cost-231 formula for the prediction of propagation path loss for GSM 1800 in UNIMAS area. Measurements of received signal strength at different places in UNIMAS area were taken with Willtek 8302 Griffin Fast Measurement Receiver. Path loss values were then obtained from these results using an appropriate expression. A comparison of measurement values and computed values from the Free-Space Propagation Loss (FSPL), Hata Cost-231 and Xia's Simplified Analytical formulae revealed that direct application of these formulae is inappropriate for the prediction of path loss in UNIMAS, as the MSE is up to 11.077 dB for Hata Cost231. Consequently, some changes have been introduced to the Hata Cost-231 model and the modified equation was verified in another cell in UNIMAS and gave acceptable MSE results between 5-6 dB
