Abstract

The literature component in the English Language Syllabus for Secondary Schools was introduced in the year 2000. It is tested in the SPM examination in English Language Paper 1. This research was carried out to evaluate the literature component items in the SPM English Paper 1 from years 2001 to 2003 with the prescribed language skills in the syllabus. It also sought to determine the levels of cognition employed in attempting the test items. The objective of the project is to find out how far the objectives of the syllabus are reflected in the literature component items in the SPM English language paper 1 and the thinking skills required in answering the questions. It employed checklists which drawn on the reading and writing sub-skills and Barrett's taxonomy as criteria. The finding of the evaluation revealed that the literature component questions in the SPM English Language Paper 1 has reflected the general objectives and most of the language sub-skills listed in the syllabus which are compatible with the format of the examination paper. It also revealed that most levels of thinking skills are tested every year especially at the inferential comprehension level. Thus, it can be concluded that the literature component questions in the SPM English Language paper 1 are valid.
