Abstract

The issue of adjustment difficulty in university is the common problem that usually faced by the first year students. It is because they need to adjust themselves to totally different environment from their secondary school where they have to learn in English. The study aims to investigate the relationship between students' demographic variables with their level of adjustment difficulty in three domains namely academic, social and psychological. The study also intends to find out the relationship between the external and internal factors with students' motivation to adjust themselves to new university environment. 162 first year students of FCSHD from Cognitive Science and HRD Program were involved. The study used adapted version of Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) to collect the data. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 14.0. The findings showed that the relationship between students' demographic variables and level of adjustment difficulty did exist. However, these findings just applied to some of the variables namely students' band for MUET, personal rating for current level of English, type of school attended before, experience living in hostel, age and course taken in UNIMAS. The results also found that the external and internal factors did influence students' motivation in adjusting themselves to new university environment.
