Abstract

In Malaysian schools, the use of workbooks beside the textbooks in the teaching and learning of English language is a common practice. There are many workbooks available in the market today. Hence, choosing the right workbook is an uphill task. This study attempted to find out the need for the F5L teachers to use workbooks, their criteria for the selection of workbooks and the ways they use the workbooks in the teaching and learning of English language. The study involved 40 experienced Form 4 English teachers from the 16 selected schools in Kuching. The criteria for the selection of the respondents are trained FSL teachers who have at least 3 years teaching experience. Three instruments were employed for the purpose of data collection: questionnaire, semi-structured interview and document analysis. The data collected was triangulated to establish validity and trustworthiness and was presented by using descriptive statistics in which it is quantified by percentage. The findings of the study generally showed that FSL teachers prefer using workbooks, as most of the textbooks that they are presently using are outdated in terms of content Besides that the teachers clarified that the workbooks provide variety of exercises and this has saved them a lot of time from preparing their own teaching and learning materials. The findings also revealed that the students' level of language proficiency and content of the workbooks were the two most important criteria in the selection of workbooks. The findings clearly showed that teachers use the workbooks to supplement the textbooks and as a resource in preparing for the lessons and insetting examination questions. The study concluded by providing some recommendations based on the implications of the study. ix
