Abstract

This study is aimed to document the teaching techniques employed by ESL teachers in teaching the short stories. It is also attempted to highlight the problems faced by these teachers when teaching the short story component. 120 English Language teachers who are teaching the short stories for Form One and Form Four from 25 secondary schools in Kuching, Samarahan and Bau divisions were randomly selected as the respondents for this study. The data was obtained through questionnaire. The findings showed that ESL teachers employed a wide range of techniques in teaching the short stories. The techniques that they most often used were question and answers, discussion and re-telling a story. Meanwhile, readers- theatre, role-play and simulation were least preferred. The most prominent problems faced by these teachers in teaching the short story component were difficulty in relating the cultural elements with the background knowledge of the students, getting students to sequence the plots of the short story, identifying themes and explaining the literary terms.
