Abstract
Writing is one of the important skills in the life of a student, in and outside the classroom. The use of collaborative writing and peer response group is two new techniques that are gaining recognition in the education world. This research aims to find out the effectiveness of the two techniques, its similarities and differences as well as its strength and weaknesses. The study was conducted in a semi-urban school in Kuching, Sarawak. The samples consist fourty 16 years old students who are divided into two different groups known as collaborative writing groups and peer response groups. The methods include teaching procedure, observation checklist and posttest. The posttest is argumentative essays titled "Computer bring more harm than good. Do you agree?", The findings revealed that there is an improvement in the students writing skills for both techniques. The students showed positive reaction even though they have not learnt using these techniques in their classrooms.
