Abstract
Peat soils cover more than 420 million hectares worldwide, of which 36 million hectares are found in the tropics and subtropics. Of the latter, some 2.7 million hectares are found in Malaysia. In Sarawak alone, it occupies about 1.66 million hectares. The present of large area of peat soil results many difficulties, mainly to the development sectors. The aim of this study is to investigate the behaviour of peat soils when treated with heat. The heat treatment chosen are 100°C, 200°C, 300°C and 400°C. Samples collected were undergo heat treatment and changes to its geotechnical properties were compared with the original characteristic of peat soils obtained during the experimental study. From the experiment works conducted, it is found that the changes in soil properties are significant to the loss of örganic content. The shear strength parameters obtained for treated samples are in the range of 5.64 kPa to 13.82 kPa for cohesion (c) value and 34.59° to 43.6° for of angle of internal friction (e). Further, the optimum moisture content reduced with an increasing of dry density for treated samples
