Abstract
This project reports the result of an experimental investigation into the properties of polystyrene concrete bricks with fly ash. Expanded polystyrene beads (EPS) were produced to replace the fine aggregate in the concrete and the fly ash was used to replace the cement. A total of 216 polystyrene concrete bricks with fly ash with the size of 195mm x I00mm x 65mm were prepared in this study. Six series of samples with different ratios were prepared in this study. The main purpose of this project is to study the mechanical and durability properties of polystyrene concrete bricks with fly ash. The properties studied were compressive strength, water absorption, weight and density, sea water resistance, dimension test, tap water test and sulphuric acid resistance of the polystyrene concrete bricks with fly ash. In this study, the samples were tested in sea water compared with the samples tested in tap water. It was found that the bricks have low in weight and density in the range of 1800 kg/m3 to 2100 kg/m3. The results for the compressive strength achieved are within the range with of 22 N/mm2 to 49.2 N/mm2. The maximum water absorption was 4.89%. Different of density changes was found when the bricks were tested in tap water, sea water resistance and sulphuric acid resistance. For the samples tested in sulpuric acid attack, it showed the changes in physical properties such as color, weight and density, dimension and the reduction of strength. The properties of the bricks are mainly influenced by the content of expanded polystyrene beads (EPS) and fly ash in the mix
