Abstract
Wastewater treatment is important and need to be protecting from any pollution. The sources of wastewater usually derived from industry, treatment plant sites, agriculture and domestic residences. Phenol and its derivative is one of the most common organic water pollutants that are widely used in many industries such as petroleum refining, pulp and paper manufacturing, etc. Among the various type of method that have been implemented, photocatalytic reaction becomes the most effective to remove the phenol. In this study, electrosynthesis of zirconia nanoparticles (EGZrO2) was carried out with enhanced degradation of phenol from an aqueous solution. This study showed that an amount of 0.4 g/L EGZrO2 catalyst was found to be optimum dosage for 10 mg/L of phenol in an aqueous solution which resulted almost complete degradation (99) after 1 hour of contact time at pH 9 under light irradiation. After 7th cycling runs, the catalyst was still stable and showed no leaching effect, with just small decreases from 99 to 93 of degradation percentage. The efficiency of the EGZrO2 catalyst prepared through this studies confirmed that its potential to be used as an excellent photocatalyst for the degradation not only phenol but also various type of dyes wastewater.
