Abstract

Biodiesel can be a renewable alternative fuel to petroleum-based fuel as the petroleum-based fuel price is soaring and the supply is diminishing for this recent year. Macroalgae have turned out to be one of the potential feedstock for producing biodiesel. The purpose of this research was to study the extraction of algal oil, conversion of algal oil to biodiesel and the performance of the diesel engine using the algal biodiesel. The method used to extract the algal oil was hexane solvent extraction. The base-catalyzed transesterification was used for the production of algal biodiesel. The engine performance test had been conducted to examine the biodiesel blends between B0 and B30. It was found that the algal biodiesel blends showed slight decrease in engine power output, brake horse power and mechanical efficiency. It was also found that the algal biodiesel blends showed slight increase in specific fuel consumption. The result showed that algal biodiesel blends were suitable for use in diesel engine. It is recommended that further research should be taken to facilitate the production of algal biodiesel on a commercial scale.
