Abstract

Present study aim to study on the antibacterial activity of Premna cordifolia (singkil) leaves extract against Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. Methanol, ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts of P. cordifolia leaves were able to inhibit the growth of E. coli, V. cholerae, S. aureus and B. cereus at various concentration of 100, 75, 50 and 25 mg/ml. The extract of P. cordifolia leaves was obtained by using maceration. The antibacterial activity was observed by using discs diffusion method. Any zone of inhibition observed was measured by measuring the diameter of clear zone surrounding the discs in millimetre (mm). At I 00 mg/ml, methanol, ethanol and ethyl acetate extract shows highest zone of inhibition against E. coli (11.7 mm), V. cholerae (9.67 mm) and V. cholerae (12.0 mm) respectively. The relative percentage inhibition of the leaves extract was compared with Gentamicin (positive control). Ethyl acetate extract show the highest relative percentage inhibition against V. cholerae (35.99%). Thus, further study on different extraction method, type of solvent and higher concentration is needed to evaluate the actual antibacterial activity of it.
