Abstract

The emergence of craft entrepreneurs in the Malaysian craft industry not only gives good profit to the businessmen but also helps to improve the country’s economy. This research was conducted to identify the factors in the involvement of community in the craft entrepreneurship field in Johor. There are many factors that influence the involvement of an individual to be an craft entrepreneur. The method used to collect the data is primary data. This method is conducted by interviewing five informants among the craft entrepreneurs and 200 sets of questionnaires were distributed to the respondents were the local community around research location. Secondary data was also used through the usage of reading materials such as books, journals, articles, newspapers, thesis, and magazine. Internet was also used for additional information. The data collected was analysed using mixed methods such as qualitative method and quantitative method. The data obtained through qualitative method was analysed based on the questioned used in the interview, while the data from the quantitative method was analysed using the Statistical Packages For Social Science (SPSS) software version 20.0 and Microsoft Excel. Frequency analysis was done to measure the frequency and perventage. On the other hand, crosstabulation was used to compare two different variables in order to obtain its percentage. The result from this research shows that the dominant factor that influences the involvement of the community in the craft entrepreneurship field is the family inheritance of this business. The other factors includes insistence of life and personal interest in business. The demand for the handicraft products is also seen as an influence that motivates an individual to become a craft entrepreneur.
