Abstract

This study aims to investigate the rhetorical appeals in TED talks on suicide awareness by identifying the appeals to ethos, logos and pathos used in the TED speech on suicide awareness issue and then determining the most suitable persuasive appeals to be used for raising suicide awareness. Eight TED speeches were collected from TED talks official channel on YouTube and transcribed for analysis purpose. Qualitative descriptive analysis had been implemented in this study for the purpose of identifying the persuasive appeals used in the TED speeches. The findings had shown that each TED speakers had applied all three appeals in their speeches but most of them had made pathos as their main persuasive appeals in their speech. The first TED speech had gained more views compared to the last TED speech, and the findings showed that the first TED speaker had used pathos as his main persuasive appeals whereas the last speaker used all three modes of persuasion equivalently. Hence, it was highly possible that pathos was the most suitable persuasive appeal for raising suicide awareness. However, further study had to be done in order to find out if suicide awareness could be raised by applying pathos in the speech.
