Abstract

Molecular studies on Nasalis larvatus, one of the endogenous primate species to Borneo is particularly limited despite the decline in numbers in recent years. Molecular studies are important to provide insight into their current state of gene pool. This study aims to determine the genetic variation, structure and gene flow of Nasalis larvatus from three populations in western Sarawak inferred by partial hypervariable I D-loop mtDNA gene. DNA genome was extracted from fecal samples and targeted gene was amplified and sequenced. Phylogenetic trees and Median-Joining Network were constructed and the haplotype and nucleotide diversity from different population were calculated. The proboscis monkey populations in western Sarawak are found to have high haplotype diversity in the absence of geographical structuring via female dispersal. Information from this study would provide the first information on maternal gene flow among proboscis monkey in western Sarawak and assist in developing a better management plan for conservation purposes.
