Abstract

faunistic composition of swallowtails in South-west Sarawak was studied based on specimen deposited in the Insect Reference Collection of the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. Out of four tribes of swallowtail, three tribes had been recorded during the study. They were Troidini, Papilionini and Leptocircini. However, none of Teinopalpini was recorded. Sampling were also conducted in three different types of forest for additional samples. The samples were collected by using aerial net and through observation. The selected sites were Borneo Highland Resort, Kubah National Park and Santubong National Park. A total of 97 individuals from 15 species were identified. Eighty-eight were males and nine were females. The dominant species was Menelaides memnon memnon represented by 30 individuals. The result revealed that mixed dipterocarp forest yielded much higher number of swallowtail individuals which was 39 as compared to other types of forest. An account of the faunistic composition of swallowtails in Southwestern Sarawak is provided and the ecological distribution in which type of forests the swallowtails is occurs.
