Abstract

This case study aims to investigate the role of discrete emotion in mediating the relationship between job demand and resource and employees' burnout. There were three independent variables covered in this research. There were "work overload, work-family conflict, and supervisory support". Discrete emotion (anger and happiness) is the mediator variable and "burnout" as the dependent variable. Data were collected using questionnaires distributed to various faculties and departments in a public university in Sarawak. A total of 133 datasets representing the participants (54 academicians and 79 support staff) were analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling (Smart-PLS version 3.2.8 tool). Out of six mediation analyses, three results were supported. The result indicates that anger and happiness mediate significantly the relationship between work overload and burnout. In addition to that anger also mediate the relationship between work-family conflict and burnout. Due to that, it is therefore recommended that the university should pay greater attention to the importance of emotion management among employees because it could affect their well-being which could also affect performance in the long run.
