Abstract

Bushy-Crested Hornbill, Anorrhinus galeritus (Family: Bucerotidae) is one of the eight hornbill species that can be found in Borneo. This study determines the significant difference between Bushy-Crested Hornbill from Sarawak and Kalimantan Borneo using museum specimens from Bogor Zoological Museum, Indonesia and Sarawak Museum, Malaysia. A total of 38 specimens were examined based on 7 morphometric parameters. Seven morphometric measurements taken were bill length (BL), bill depth (BD), bill width (BW), head to bill length (HB), tarsus (TR), wing length (WL), and total length (TL). All morphometric parameters were analyzed using the discriminant function analysis (DFA). Among 7 morphometric parameters, 2 were identified as the most important morphometric parameters, namely, bill depth (BD) and head to bill length (HB). This corresponds to their great discriminating ability when compared to the other parameters. Furthermore, Randomization Tests indicate that there is a significant difference between Bushy-crested Hornbill from Sarawak and Kalimantan Borneo. Among the possible underlying reasons for this difference are cryptic species, imprecise measurements due to shrinkages, and data are not categorized into sexual differences.
