Abstract

Airborne algae are one of the bio-components present in the air. Airborne algae are known to be the least studied organism in the aerobiology although they may exert an unfavorable impact on human health for instance allergy, skin irritation, hay fever and respiratory problems. In order to study the diversity of aero-algal flora in Sematan Beach, an experiment has been conducted for 3 months from December 2014 to February 2015. Slide sampler exposure method used, at five selected point along the Sematan Beach. Eight genera have been identified during the study which came from the class of Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae. The eight genera listed are Lyngbya sp., Phormidium sp., Anabaena sp., Microcystis sp., Chlamydomonas sp., Spirogyra sp., Lauderia sp., and Navicula sp. The most dominant genus is Phormedium sp. This study was conducted to obtain some information whether the aero-algal flora is really present in the air of Sematan Beach. The research could provide a base line data for future study taxa of economic importance and those that influence human health.
